  In Spring 2024 the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) conducted a survey to understand the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs and preferences of its members.

  Ongoing professional development is crucial for maintaining and enhancing the skills and knowledge required to deliver high-quality language services, and ITI encourages all members to undertake at least 30 hours of CPD activities every year. The survey responses broadly reflect this commitment, with the majority of respondents dedicating between 30-49 hours or 50-99 hours per year to their professional development. However, there was significant variation, with some members logging less than 10 hours annually, while others invested over 100 hours. In terms of frequency, most members engage in CPD activities on a monthly or weekly basis, demonstrating a consistent commitment to ongoing learning and skill development.

  It was also encouraging to note that respondents overwhelmingly recognise the value of CPD. Many see it as essential for keeping pace with industry developments, particularly in the face of rapidly evolving technologies.

  One of the clearest, but perhaps least surprising, findings of the survey is the strong interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on the translation and interpreting professions.

  This focus on AI reflects the significant changes occurring in the language industry. As one respondent noted, “AI is definitely a hot topic at the moment, and CPD on it would help linguists include it in their service offerings to future-proof their business.” However, members also emphasised the need for a balanced approach, with another respondent suggesting that ITI should “provide an honest view of the current situation while offering inspiration and practical advice on how to succeed in this environment.”

  Marketing and business skills also emerged as key priorities for many survey respondents. Translators and interpreters are keen to develop their ability to attract high-quality clients. They also want to hone their negotiation skills to agree fair rates, with the aim of supporting sustainable business models. This focus on business acumen underscores the entrepreneurial approach that language professionals need to operate successfully in a competitive market.

  Specialisation and subject-specific training also featured prominently in the survey responses. Many members expressed interest in deepening their expertise in areas such as legal, medical, and technical translation as a strategy for demonstrating their added value to clients. As one respondent put it, “Specialisation, specialisation, specialisation – because specialisation is key to survival in today's translation climate.”

  Interestingly, the survey revealed some differences in priorities between newcomers to the profession and more experienced practitioners. Those with less experience tended to focus on developing a wide range of skills and actively seeking networking opportunities. In contrast, more seasoned professionals tended to prioritise staying informed about industry developments and maintaining their high professional standards.

There were also some notable differences between translators and interpreters in their CPD preferences. While both groups share an interest in AI and its implications, interpreters placed a stronger emphasis on interpreting-specific training and skills development. They also seemed to value networking and collaboration opportunities more highly.

Despite these differences, both translators and interpreters consistently highlighted the importance of honing their communication skills. This encompasses not only language proficiency but also the ability to interact effectively with clients, explain complex concepts, and advocate for the value of professional language services.

These insights are incredibly useful to the ITI team as we launch our new Learning Management System (LMS) and develop our future CPD programme. It is clear that ITI members are committed to continuing their professional development and we will aim to support their evolving needs by offering a diverse range of courses. We also hope to strengthen our collaboration with the ITI Networks in terms of delivering training in languages and specialisms while building a core ITI programme focussing on the following key areas:

By addressing these areas we hope to help our members navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by the changing language industry landscape. As one survey respondent aptly put it, “We need to face reality, even if it is frightening, in order to make necessary changes in our business models, specialisms, use of technology, client types, and more.”
