What preparations should you make if you want to be a translator?
First, a good translator must be patient and hard-working. As we all know, there is no such thing as the best translation, only the better translation. So, a good translator should be willing to revise his translation hundreds of times and continue to improve himself in this process.
Second, a translator must read widely and have a broad range of knowledge. Every translator will face materials from many different fields, such as technology, law or medical care. Therefore, a good translator should keep learning new things, and know something about everything. In other words, a translator is a life-long learner.
Finally, a good translator should not only master the languages but also deepen his knowledge of different cultural backgrounds, including history, philosophy, economy, technology, national realities and so on. In doing so, he can translate better works.
Why are you the right candidate?
First, I have a great passion for translation and I am ready to devote myself to this cause. I think a good translator should love translation and enjoy the delight of work. My favorite translator Xu Yuanchong devoted himself to translation and now he is 100 years old but still translating. I was moved by his dedication and perseverance. I want to follow his steps to study further and I hope I can turn my interest in translation into my life-long career.
Second, I am a self-disciplined person and I have great perseverance to achieve my goals. I prepared for the exam for half a year. During this period, I resisted all the temptations and just kept learning. Besides, I am good at managing my time, setting to-do lists, and keeping to my plans. And I can multitask and work under great pressure.
Third, I am hard-working. I never let go of any difficulties that I encountered in my study. What’s more, I am willing to revise my translation hundreds of times because I know I will get better and better in this process. I know that there is no such thing as the best translation, only the better translation. A good translator must realize this truth and keep learning, being a life-long learner.
Finally, I am interested in different cultures and I am eager to learn more. A good translator should not only master the languages but also deepen his or her knowledge of different cultural backgrounds, including history, philosophy, economy, technology and national realities, and so on. When I encounter some new words in translation, I would check for the background of the words to better understand the text.
In conclusion, I think a can become a competent translator after training in XXX(目标院校).
3. As a translator, do you think you should know something about everything or know everything about something?
I think as translators, we should first know everything about something. For example, if I had a chance to learn media translation in this school, which I’m interested in, I would delve deeper into this subject. Because only in this way can I have a better understanding of media translation and be a professional translator. Therefore, we should know everything about something first.
In this process, we should also try to know something about everything. Because every translator will face materials from many different fields, such as technology, law, or medical care. Especially in media translation, because media translation covers a broad range of areas, like news, movies, advertising, education, and so on. Therefore, a translator must read widely and have a broad range of knowledge.
Anyway, a good translator should keep learning new things. Because the world is developing and we should keep pace with the times. In other words, we should both know something about everything and know everything about something. We should be life-long learners.
Is a translator/interpreter born or trained?
I think a translator is trained.
Some people might have a gift for language or translation so that they can learn faster than others. But I don’t think talent is the most important factor. We all know the story of Fang Zhongyong, who showed literary talent at the age of five. However, without learning and practice, he degraded into an ordinary person. The translation is the same.
Translation is nothing but labor and diligence. With a good attitude and application, one can be a qualified translator although he has no talent. On the contrary, one cannot become a qualified translator without training although he has the talent.
In conclusion, I believe that a translator is trained, not born.
What do you think of the translator's invisibility?
Venuti put forward invisibility in his work The Translator’s Invisibility. He believes that the translator’s invisibility is formed in two ways.
First, the translator adopts a transparent and fluent style to make the text smooth and acceptable to target readers. Second, the culture and customs of the target readers force the translator to choose to be invisible.
From my perspective, a translator should...
What do you think the life of an interpreter/translator should be like?
Well, in my imagination, if I become a translator, I hope I can translate something I like.
Maybe I will have a big project which I should work on for several months. During this time, I will spend many days searching for an appropriate expression. For example, maybe I should repeatedly read a book from first to last to decide the translation of the title. It will be a demanding and tiring task, but I will enjoy it.
And after finishing my work, I will take a week off and do everything I like. I think this can keep me mentally and physically fit. And then I can devote myself to the next project.
